New paper published in Ecosystems

Carla has a new article that is in early view in Ecosystems on the role of mussels in nutrient provisioning and sequestration. Specifically, this article highlights that mussel driven nutrient recycling can result in higher primary production. Further, it estimates the storage rates of nutrients through mussel production. Side-scan sonar workshop

We conducted a one day mini-workshop at the Jones Ecological Research Center at Ichauway. Jane Kunberger (undergraduate), Brian van Ee (PhD student), and Monica Winebarger (incoming PhD student), and Carla all participated while Adam Kaeser (USFWS) provided his expertise on the matter. The group collected data on the Flint River and Ichawaynochaway Creek and processed all their data in the classroom that afternoon. Zach Nickerson receives a research grant!

Zach Nickerson just received news that the proposal he put in for the 2017 Conchologists of America (http://www.conchologistsofamerica.org/publications/) Academic Grant has been funded. This grant will be used to help fund his denitrification assays and travel to Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Great job Zach!

The Atkinson lab drove up to Raleigh, NC for the annual Society for Freshwater Science (SFS, formally NABS) meeting. Carla Atkinson, Jane Kunberger, Zach Nickerson, Lauren Shouse, and Brian van Ee all attended and gave either a poster or oral presentation.
