Joining the Lab
I am always looking for exceptional students aiming to pursue research in my lab. My lab has opportunities available for conducting work in multiple systems and study organisms. Opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate research are available.
Undergraduate students should inquire about specific research projects in the lab. Students with an interest in ecology, limnology, and environmental sciences are particularly encouraged to inquire. Students may receive research credit for semesters that they are doing active research.
Prospective graduate students are encouraged to contact me to discuss potential research projects and available funding prior to applying to the graduate program. If you are interested in joining the Atkinson lab for graduate research, please contact me at [email protected] with a brief description of your research interests, an updated curriculum vitae that includes your research skills and experiences (e.g., presentations, publications, chemistry, SCUBA, etc), and a PDF of your unofficial university transcripts. You can learn more about the formal application process on the Department of Biological Sciences webpage. My aim is to recruit students who are willing to proactively develop both a solid conceptual framework for their ideas and I encourage the use both observational and experimental approaches towards the end of generating interesting research projects. Enthusiasm for science and field work and a strong work ethic are essential prerequisites for joining my lab. Sources of support vary, but include research assistantships on funded grants, fellowships from NSF, fellowships from the University of Alabama, or teaching assistantships. Incoming doctoral students have the opportunity to submit fellowship proposals to NSF and your participation in these opportunities is strongly encouraged. Also, check out this list of student grants to see if you qualify. I look forward to speaking with you about how your interests may align with ongoing and future projects!
